Web design is an art of creating various forms of content that end users can retrieve via the World Wide Web. The web content used in web design is usually created in formats that can be transmitted via the World Wide Web such as hypermedia and hypertext using an appropriate web browser or any other kind of software that can support web design applications such as RSS readers, microblogging clients and Internet television clients.

The motive of engaging in web design is to develop a web site. A typical web site encompasses a series of electronic files that are utilized in a particular web server or servers in web design. The files are utilized in presentation of a multiplicity of contents as well as interactive interfaces or features that can be accessed by end users or web design people as web pages the moment the users send a request command. This unique capability enables web design experts to place a variety of elements such as forms, bit-mapped images in .gif and .jpeg formats, as well as text. The placement is done using a variety of languages including HTML, XHTML and XML. If the people involved in web design need to use more complex media such as vector graphics, animations, sounds and videos, they must integrate other web design specific add-ons such as Java run-time environment, QuickTime and Flash.

Web design can be compared to publishing. As such, in order to ensure that the end users of a given web site get what they want, the web design process must be tailored with consideration of a number of factors. First is the content of the web site. Web design should target a particular group through the web content. Second is usability - the web site should be easy to use in order to gain popularity. Third, the site should incorporate graphics and styles from web design that are consistent between interfaces in order to enhance their appeal. The web design process should also be tailored such that contents of the site are clearly visible and can be easily retrieved by most search engines.

In order to achieve the set of objectives mentioned above, innovative web design strategies have been formulated. Most web browsers are now compliant with W3C standards and this has enabled wider web design applications involving XML and XHTML languages as well as Cascading Style Sheets for manipulation of the web page contents to suit specific needs. Hence, it is possible to fulfill all the requirements of web design without much hassle.
