When starting up a business, and also very often while running it, business owners usually have their heads around what they need to get done right. If we are talking about an Internet business, there are few things that must be put into place if you are serious about getting success but apart from those things that you should do, it would also be a good idea to think about what you should be avoiding.

We can still say that online business is a fairly new phenomenon. First there was the discovery that the Internet is great for quick and efficient communication and before too long we realized that the Internet is also an excellent medium for business. Once this realization sunk in, there were hundreds and thousands of ventures getting started online and while some of these businesses were raving successes, there are a number that didn’t do all that well. However, as a whole online business is a booming trend that just seems to be getting bigger and better with each passing day.

Nevertheless, at no time has Internet business been an easy task. The thing with Internet marketing is that it is very different from offline marketing, even though there are plenty of overlapping features between the two. The strongest tool that you have with an online business is your website but the problem is that many times online business owners choose to treat their website merely as an information catalogue that their existing and potential clients can look through. Truth be told, that is a complete waste of some tremendous technology that you have at your disposal. There is so much that you can do with a website in order to make your business as productive as it can be.

Being a visual medium, one of the things that stand out the most about a website is obviously its design. You must have noticed yourself that while some websites are very appealing to the eye, others just seem very dull and boring. A business owner might brush aside this factor thinking that there is more to a website than how it looks but though that is true, another truth is also the fact that visitors who don’t find a site visually appealing might leave the site as soon as they arrive there.

All that said, however, website design is not only about visual appeal. It is important that the site should be appealing to the eye but the design of a website has a stronger role to play than just looking pretty. Take a look at your website and answer this question: Is the site good for practical use?

We have all, at some point of the other, come across fancy sites where the font is hard to read. How many people do you really think will stick around long enough to decipher illegible font? Being creative is a good idea but if it is going to come in the way of your visitors understanding what you are trying to communicate to them then the whole purpose is lost. Another common problem that occurs with website design is the background or graphics being too crowded or flashy. The urge to be different and artistic is understandable but if the end result is not attracting visitors then you know you are on the wrong track.

Regardless of the quality of the content on your website it is important that you present the written words in a good manner. One thing you might have noticed when you surf online is that long pages where you have to keep scrolling down are not very comfortable to read. If you have a lot of content, divide them up into different pages so that readers do not have to keep scrolling down. Apart from making it easier on the eye, dividing up content means that the visitor can choose what he or she wants to read instead of reading through the whole thing.

Then there is the ever so important issue of navigation. Your site might look great and have really well written content on it but if it is difficult to move around on your site then you are still going to lose visitors. Make sure that it is easy to move from one page to any other page on the site at all times. Navigation is a part of user-friendliness and as mentioned earlier, most surfers will not stick around long enough to figure out a confusing or tediously-put-together website.

When designing a website it is important that the designer thinks from the visitor’s point of view. It is true that any visitor would be impressed with creative and original designs but you also need to make sure that the design is, not only appealing to the eye but also cohesive with the rest of your website and content and, above all, makes practical sense.
